It has been 27+ years since I’ve been so reckless.
I’ve had the companionship of a dog or two in my young adult years but I do believe that I am learning more from this dog, Reckless, than ever before. Is it because I’m more mature or is it the Hand of God working through one of His instruments? After all, God spoke to Balaam through a donkey (Numbers 22:22-35) what is to keep Him from using an animal again for instruction? (Although I stake no claim to being a “Balaam”)
As I have been working with her, enjoying some of the previous training she had received from a previous manager (she’s a rescued dog) I am also having to gently retrain the negative “training” she has endured as well. As my patience is tested through her confusion, my thoughts roam to my heavenly Father God, which some may find rather odd. The deal is, I am aiming to imitate my holy, heavenly Father and will use every “opportunity” presented to me, even by learning from my dog. Hopefully I will embrace every opportunity, I am known to be a bit muley time to time.
As it turns out, I do think that she is training me more than I am training her. Dog to owner training, 101.
Have you ever accidentally stepped on your pets paw, or bumped them unintentionally, or forgot and got too close to a sensitive area on their body? Wow. I’m amazed at the unconditional “forgiveness” that she gives me. Startled that I hurt her, immediately I’m talking to her like a person with something like, “Oh, I’m so sorry baby,” pat, pat. And immediately all is forgiven. Her tail is wagging vigorously in total forgiveness as she nuzzles into my arms in an animal-to- human big hug, licking me in an acceptance of my clumsiness and unintentional grievance. I mean, seriously, she immediately forgives!
She was spayed hours before she came to live with me, so she is wearing the “collar of shame”; that hindering Elizabethan collar, to prevent her from damaging her fresh wound or sutures. Knowing that she can’t get to her head or face, I warmed up a dog-cloth and gently cleaned her face. Grateful for the tenderness and care, she licks mine in return. Aww … a big, sloppy dog kiss.
Yes, the Lord is using this animal to instruct me.
When was the last time I was so quick to forgive an offense directed at me, by anyone? And the last time I returned a favor or an act of kindness? Am I paying Him, the Lord of lords and King of kings, forward? God is so quick to forgive when we ask! He pours His love out on us, without measure, even when we are so recklessly and casually going through the motions of life, of earning a living, occasionally “bumping” into Him when we’ve taken a second to breathe. He understands and forgives, even when we “step on Him” through our thoughtlessness and sins.
I named her Reckless “because she looks reckless. As I was choosing between her, a Labrador and German shepherd mix with a German shepherd, she really drew me in. But she looked like such a misfit with her one Lab ear, the other a shepherd ear and her shepherd tail that I thought she was a perfect match for this social misfit to manage her. One outcast to another, we really understand one another.
My God of heaven and earth is preparing me for more of Him as He uses a “Reckless” dog to train me in the very basic of basics; loving one another without prejudice, and with complete abandon. God is teaching and directing us through His holy Spirit and He also instructs us quite clearly through His Word; the holy Bible. But sometimes, the more fractured of us need an additional helping of grace. In my case, and for this season in my life journey, He is using a domesticated animal.
I say fractured because this year so far has been especially difficult with losing grandchildren a few months ago, then my sibling committed suicide this July 4th. Do not misunderstand the following, but I think I understand the suicide mindset now. A person can bear just so much regret. As Reckless gives me wordless comfort, understanding, and patience during my season of trial and renewing, I see God’s love for me and His comforting grace in many ways. My regrets are being transformed as I’m learning a different dimension of loving. It’s a process and I really wish my sib had reached that place before it was too late.
Yes, indeed. God can use an animal to speak to (even verbally as told in Numbers 22) and to train us when we are receptive to Him.
Do you know the loving, forgiving God of all creation?
Are you saved, free from judgment for your sins? Time is NOT on your side, your salvation is something that never should be put off. God has been waiting for you. If you are ready to spend a blissful, active, productive retirement in eternity with your Creator, pray the following. If you are ready to spend eternity in burning hell, among the dammed in unceasing torture, then you have only yourself to blame. But I must warn you that you will regret it not for the rest of your life, but for all of eternity.
Dear Lord Jesus,
I am a sinner that needs forgiveness and I ask You Father God, Lord Jesus, to forgive me. I believe You are Savior and Lord Who shed Your Blood and died for my sins to be forgiven, and rose from the dead; You live forever. I turn from (repent) my sins and invite You Jesus Christ of Nazareth to come into my heart and life as Savior and Lord. Please, help me to glorify You in all I say and do. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and personal Savior. I ask for supernatural wisdom and discernment as I obediently enter the mission filed; my everyday neighborhood, my family and friends. I ask for holy boldness as I seek out the unbeliever, (the lost) and tell them the good news of Jesus Christ. I can do Your will through Your power in me, Your Bible tells me so. In the all powerful Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth I pray. Amen.
Tell others about your new life in Jesus Christ, spread the good news! Help your loved ones, your friends, steer them away from the pit of hell. Begin immediately reading the Bible, ask God the Holy Spirit for understanding, for His enlightenment as you begin to discover intimate relationship with your Creator through His Word.
The gospel of Mark or John in the New Testament will give you a quick overview. Life as you know it is radically changing and it is not going to get better (as an unbeliever) until the spiritual war that we are exposed to has run its due course. Do not dismay with the coming events because the war has already been won, Jesus Christ is victorious. Therefore we, as His believers/followers are victorious also.
Stay in close contact with mature Christians to help you as you do not have the luxury of time. We need to spiritually “grow up” quickly, for His full disclosure of the signs of the end times are upon us.
Come to the safety of God almighty, nothing & nobody else can save you!
