Pass the Hat Please

The group gathered at the table.

Pass-the-HatSet before each of them was a small strip of paper with a pen beside it.

He instructed the group to each write down the biggest sin they had committed and to fold the paper in half so that no one could see what they had written down.

He reached over to retrieve the hat that rested in the middle of the table and asked the nearest person to place his paper into the hat, then to pass the hat.

When everyone had finished, He told the group that He would pull out each persons “big” sin and would identify who it belonged to. Nervous looks were exchanged.

As He pulled from the hat and read each paper the group was both shocked and suspicious. They began to look at one another wondering which ones were so brazen. But half way through His naming the sins, they began to understand the pattern.

Each and every page was labeled the same; SIN.

Then Jesus explained. In His eyes, all sin is sin. Whether the offense was murder, a lie, theft, cursing, anger, unforgiveness, satanism it didn’t matter because sin is sin. What mattered was that anything contrary to His law is sin, that He came to free mankind from the disgrace and shame that accompanied sin and to pay each of our sin debt in full. Through His monumental and eternal sacrifice, we are completely forgiven and freed from the bondage of sin.

He reminded the group that each one seated there was born again and sin debt free. In that respect every individual there was on equal standing. Each persons past was exactly that: past. Jesus said, “Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.” that settles it.

Smiles began to spread, a few nodded their agreement.

“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Jesus is calling you to a loving relationship and forgiveness. Do not ignore His tug at your heart, His reaching out to you. Don’t reject the colossal price that He paid for your freedom, His Personal gift for you.

Pray aloud:

 Dear Lord Jesus,
I am a sinner that needs forgiveness and I ask You to forgive me. I believe You are Savior and Lord Who Shed Your Blood and  died for my sins to be forgiven, and rose from the dead; You live forever. I turn from (repent) my sins and invite You Jesus Christ of Nazareth to come into my heart and life as Savior and Lord. Please, help me to glorify You in all I say and do. I want to trust and follow You as my Lord and personal Savior. In the all powerful Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth I pray. Amen.
